Switching from Durban to East London port may solve grain exporters' problems.

Pressure at the congested Durban port could be relieved if grain producers start using the East London port for exports instead, an industry player says.

During a panel discussion on infrastructure and logistics at the annual agricultural trade show, Nampo Harvest Day 2022, industry players shared solutions for South Africa's infrastructure and logistic constraints, which are limiting the country's export potential.

Agricultural produce has been expanding rapidly. The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy expects high-value crop volumes to increase 50% by 2030. The grain market has grown production annually by 9% over the past 12 years, but domestic demand for grain products has only increased by 2%, according to panellist, Dr André van der Vyver, the executive director of the South African Cereals & Oilseeds Trade Association (Sacota).
