More than 3.2 million people in South Africa involved in life partnerships will breathe a collective sigh of relief at the news that Parliament has released the Judicial Matters Amendment Bill. If Parliament approves the Bill and the President signs it into law (which is expected to happen later this year- 2023), life partners in a relationship intended to be permanent, will be included in the legal definition of “spouse”.
