WAMKELE MENE, SA CHIEF NEGOTIATOR FOR AFCFTA
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement came into force on 30 May 2019. This ended fourteen months of negotiations and the end of the first phase. The operational phase of the Agreement was subsequently launched on 7 July 2019 at the 12th Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Niamey, Niger.
By coming into force, the AfCFTA Agreement will ultimately lead to a single continental market for goods and services. If successful, the AfCFTA will promote the free movement of people and investments, expand intra-Africa trade across the regional economic communities and the continent in general, enhance competitiveness and support economic growth
